THE CONCEPT
Available as primary residences or river tourism accommodations, floating houses are a type of alternative housing, either individual or communal. They can be moored or anchored to a fixed point, stationary, or motorized to move like boats, with varying degrees of comfort and amenities. Some are highly sought after and prized, for example, the famous houseboats on the riverbanks of major cities, or more specifically, the floating fishing villages of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam. They can be equipped with the comforts of a real house, just like an apartment/hotel, a camper van, a caravan, a trailer, a cabin, or even a geodesic dome. Subject to river and lake tourism regulations, or maritime navigation regulations, they can benefit, by mooring in a marina, from access to public services (running water, electricity, laundry, sanitation, toilets, maintenance, waste management, commerce, urban life and tourism).
The Origins of Floating Homes
The origins of floating homes and cabins on the water can be traced back to the small lakeside villages found in certain regions of the world, such as the floating islands of Lake Titicaca in Peru and Bolivia. Today, with the advent of new construction methods, architects and designers are brimming with ideas and demonstrating originality in designing floating homes that are increasingly appealing to people for their innovative nature and their connection to the surrounding environment. The floating home represents the ultimate in housing. Indeed, current floating accommodations fully comply with current building standards and guarantee complete safety during use. Floating platforms are specifically designed to maintain exceptional stability, regardless of the intended location.
